Schaap Eiland Hiking Trail in Yzerfontein is 2km long, it starts from the Main Beach – or Sixteen Mile Beach as it is also known – and then runs in a southerly direction, that is, towards the harbour. It is an easy walk for most people.
Along this stretch of coastline, you will encounter many indigenous bird species, including the small, black Oyster Catcher and Black Cormorants. During Whaling season, between July and October, and sometimes later in the year, you may also see Humpback Whales who come inshore to breed.
Another highlight of this trail is spring flower season, which is from August to October when you can experience parts of the Trail in full bloom with beautiful vygies (succulents), aloes, and other small flowers.
